County talks granite repair

Ellsworth County Commissioners met with Ralph Doubrava and Kirk Robson Monday regarding how to stabilize the granite on the front of the Ellsworth County Courthouse. It was recently discovered there was separation between the portions of the granite, especially on the south column because the anchoring is failing. Doubrava and Robson have installed bracing and blocked off the area in question for safety considerations.

Walkers are Leopold Conservation Award finalists

Last year, Glenn and Barbara Walker had the distinction of being the Ellsworth County Soil Conservation District’s Grassland Award winners. Their 1,200 acres are just a few short miles from the land upon which Glenn Walker grew up, the Forkner Ranch in Mulberry Township, where his parents ranched in a joint venture with owner Lowell Forkner.

The use of seals to notarize or confirm the authenticity of documents or to brand products as in a modern trademark is rooted in antiquity. Examples of seals engraved with figures and symbols have been found from approximately 3,400 B.C. Mesopotamia. Seals are believed to have been in use before that, perhaps hundreds of years before the invention of writing.
