In early January, 1867, Jack McDowell of Kansas City stepped into the W. K. Pollard Livery at Council Grove in need of transportation to Junction City. Pollard had been in Council Grove since 1857. He had seen hundreds of travelers passing along the trail, most of them in a rush to move on.

The Lady Oilers took a close loss Tuesday night to Hesston, 36-42. Central Plains fell behind early, trailing 3-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Oilers battled back, outscoring the Eagles in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, tying the game going into the 4th.
Read moreILSON — The cost of being in the Wilson City Cemetery is going up. At Monday’s meeting of the Wilson City Council, Ordinance 859 was approved. The ordinance increases the cost of a opening a regular or mausoleum grave from $250 to $350, which was approved at the Jan. 19 meeting. The ordinance also increases the cost of opening a surface mausoleum from $300 to $400, a cremation grave from $100 to $150, disinterment (removal only) from $300 to $400 and disinterment (removal and reburial) from $500 to $750.
