Thoughts from a dad ... concerned constituent

Editor’s Note — One of the many purposes of a community newspaper is to provide a forum for public discussion. A week ago, the editor made the decision to break with tradition and publish what started as a letter to the editor on the front page instead of the editorial page because of the importance of the subject. After the article appeared, Ellsworth County’s John Donley called and asked for equal time and placement. We agreed to his request as a matter of fairness. You might call it a “temporary new normal.” There’s been a lot of that in 2020. However, starting with the Aug. 20 edition, signed letters will still be welcome, but they will return to the editorial page, where we will set aside as much space as we need for readers to share their ideas. More about that in the next edition.
