Cutting a wide swath

Drury J. Warren moved his family from Arkansas to Grouse Creek south of Silverdale, Kan., in 1875. He was born in Tennessee and defended the Confederacy as 2nd Sgt. in Company H, 30th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. After the fall of Fort Donelson, Tenn., in February of 1862, he enlisted in an undisclosed cavalry unit, later finishing out his service in Anderson’s Battalion, Arkansas Cavalry. Captured by Union soldiers at Mound City, Kan., Warren was held as a prisoner-of-war at Alton, Ill., until released in a prisoner exchange at James River, Va.

Bearcat tennis ties Central Plains for first

CLAFLIN — On April 18, the Ellsworth Bearcat varsity boys’ tennis team traveled to Central Plains for a quad tournament. They tied for first place with Central Plains, earning 22 points. The No. 1 doubles team of junior Brendan Anderson and senior Chase Bourbon contributed 9 of those points.

Ellsworth baseball finishes game with 15-0 win

MINNEAPOLIS — The Bearcats traveled back to Minneapolis April 21 to finish their second game against the Lions which was postponed due to lightning April 14.

Bearcat softball has winning streak

In a five-game week, the Bearcat softball team took home four victories. They started the week playing Sacred Heart April 18, beating the Knights 19-4 in both games.

Wilson espouses ‘never give up’ philosophy

The 63rd annual Wilson High School Invitational Track Meet uttered its swan song April 18, relinquishing its unofficial title of the “Oldest Continuous High School Track Meet West of the Mississippi.”
