Gen. Colin Powell passed away this week from complications from COVID-19, according to news reports. His passing caused us to reread his May 14, 1994 speech to Howard University graduates. It came as the Washington, D.C. campus was still reeling from racial turmoil following two speeches by a black nationalist. Critics berated Howard for allowing the hate-filled rhetoric. Powell defended the university, but his defense came with a warning. Here are parts of his speech that seem especially relevant today.

The Great Kearney War

The new town of Kearney Junction, Neb., was platted in 1871 when the grade for the new Burlington & Missouri River Railroad connected to the Union Pacific. Tracks were finally finished to the junction in September of 1872, and stockyards were built to receive cattle in the coming year.

Ellsworth senior Nicole Haase ended her high school tennis career Saturday with a second place finish at the 3-2-1A State Tennis Championships at the Maize South High School Tennis Complex at Wichita.
