The subject of the editorial cartoon was the decision earlier this month by the Central Plains School District to consolidate grades 7-12 at Claflin, leaving Wilson with only elementary grades.

We would propose that appreciation come not just during one week in the spring, but year-round, and that it should extend to all those who work in Kansas public schools.

The Kansas Legislature returned for session the last week of April. The key item was to finalize the budget as well as finish up some policy initiatives and consider whether to override vetoes from the governor.

Like so many who had served in the terrible Civil War, Warren Young Jenkins returned to Illinois from the Civil War in 1864, and “went to housekeeping” with his new bride, Sarah V. (Boone). Together they worked rough timbered land with stumps and sprouts that “worried and disgusted” Jenkins to such a degree that he determined to move to the promised land of Kansas.
