“They’re replacing the scale in front of the main office — the truck scale,” General Manager Riley Zamrzla said. “We’re tearing it out and going back with a steel deck scale.”

Charles “Charlie” J. Yager, 80, passed away with his wife by his side Sept. 15, 2025, at Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth, Kan. He was born March 2, 1945, in Great Bend to Charles “Curly” W. and Lucille (Glick) Yager. Charlie married his high school sweetheart, Sharlene Hazen, on Sept. 6, 1964. She passed away April 13, 1986. Charlie married Jacqueline Murray on June 16, 1990.
Janett Marie Prester passed away on March 25, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on Nov. 20, 1950, in Wilson, Kan., to Sam and Ruth Steinle. The youngest of three children, Janett spent her entire life in Wilson and cherished her childhood with her siblings Bernice and Gerald.
Allen Joe Jirik, 89, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Hoisington, Kan. He was born Jan. 20, 1937, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Joe and Mary (Votruba) Jirik. Allen served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Holyrood American Legion Post 200 and the Russell VFW Post 6240. Allen married Frances Wagner in Ellsworth on April 22, 1961.
Donald (Mert) Anschutz, 91, of Wilson, Kan., passed away on April 7, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Society — Ellsworth Village in Ellsworth, Kan.
The Ellsworth softball team achieved their first sweep of the season as they played host to the Russell Broncos April 7.
RUSSELL — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ track teams are looking to key upperclassmen for leadership this season while gaining valuable experience for the underclassmen. Despite only three seniors on the girls’ roster, the team has a good mixture of freshmen through juniors for a balanced attack.

This is to remind us that even in our rural corner of Kansas, things are happening. Growth happens.
As we set our clocks forward this month, it was an apt reminder of how this time of year always feels like it’s kicking into a new gear. Coming back from spring break, there is renewed momentum, full of promise. It’s hard not to feel a sense of energy and optimism when we pay attention to the great things happening in our schools and communities.
There’s nothing more flattering, or dangerous, for writers than having their words quoted in an approving manner. It’s the starkest evidence that out of all the combinations of letters and words in existence, they’ve arranged a few that offer readers clarity, truth or illumination.
