KANOPOLIS — A visitor to Kanopolis on the morning of March 14 may have imagined they stepped in a time warp. A two-block are near the intersection of Ohio and Wyoming streets was cordoned off and populated with a large group of people wearing authentic 1874-era military uniforms and Native American garb. Horses milled about on the grounds while 1870s era military tents and equipment surrounded one of the buildings at the Fort Harker Guardhouse Museum Complex.

SALINA — Kiley Barnett, 39, Kanopolis, appeared in Saline County District Court March 25 for a review hearing. She was allegedly involved in a fatal crash resulting in a motorcyclist being killed on a rural Saline County road.
David M. Koralek, Sr., 83, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at his home in Ellsworth, Kan. He was born Nov. 17, 1942, in Ellsworth to Ben and Lillian (Choitz) Koralek. David enlisted in the United States Army at semester of his senior year of high school and continued to serve in the National Guard and Army Reserve for many years after his active duty service.
Douglas Joseph Kepka, 78, of Emporia, Kan., passed away peacefully March 31, 2026, at Newman Regional Health. He was born to Leo Joseph and Betty Jean (Andreasen) Kepka. Doug graduated from Ellsworth High School (1966) and Fort Hays State University (1970). He married Honor Louise (Fiddler) Kepka on June 9, 1973, and they shared 52 years of marriage.
Ronald “Ron” James Hubka, 66, of Wilson, Kan., passed away on March 31, 2026, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.
C. Byrne Wood, 91, of Ellsworth, Kan., and former Russell, Kan., resident, died on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with family by his side at the Lindsborg Community Hospital in Lindsborg, Kan.
RUSSELL — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ track teams are looking to key upperclassmen for leadership this season while gaining valuable experience for the underclassmen. Despite only three seniors on the girls’ roster, the team has a good mixture of freshmen through juniors for a balanced attack.
The Ellsworth varsity tennis team opened the season at home at their invitational tournament. Ellsworth fielded two teams, designated as Ellsworth Black and Ellsworth Red.
As we set our clocks forward this month, it was an apt reminder of how this time of year always feels like it’s kicking into a new gear. Coming back from spring break, there is renewed momentum, full of promise. It’s hard not to feel a sense of energy and optimism when we pay attention to the great things happening in our schools and communities.
