Eleanor G. Bach, 94, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024 in Manhattan, Kan. She was born, the youngest of nine children, June 2, 1929, in Ellsworth, Kan., to W.E. and Grace (Allen) Sheridan, who were raised in the Dust Bowl days of Kansas.

Longtime Homer, Alaska, resident Darlene L. Sheldon, 84, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024, at South Peninsula Hospital, Homer.

Services will be held at the Homer American Legion with the time and date to be announced.

Wayne W. Schultz, 74, passed away Friday, April 19, 2024, in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Alfred and Madonna (Lyne) Schultz. Wayne was a lifetime resident of the Ellsworth area where he was a farmer and rancher and previously owned and operated Schultz Hardware and Welding, Lorraine, Kan. He also served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Dolores Jacqueline “Peachie” Schmidt, Wilson, Kan., passed away Dec. 21, 2023, in Hays, Kan., at the age of 99.

 

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Damar, Kan.

In a previous adventure on The Way West, a young Phillipe St. George Cooke arrived at Cantonment Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth’s earliest designation, in the spring of 1829. 2nd Lt. Cooke was with four companies of the 6th Infantry Regiment under the command of Maj. Bennett Riley. Within two weeks, he took the field in a campaign to protect freighting companies from marauding Pawnees along the Santa Fe Trail. The campaign kept the troops in the field throughout the summer.
