James Lee Zamrzla was born on a cold winter’s day Jan. 21, 1939, the first son of James Edward and Mary Ann (Charvat) Zamrzla in a small house in Wilson, Kan. He married Karen Koerner on Jan. 24, 1962. They had one daughter, Christine.

Wallace Dale Murphy, 94, passed away at his home while preparing for Thanksgiving lunch on Nov. 27, 2025. He was born Dec. 11, 1930, to Dallas and Rosaline (Panzer) Murphy at the family home in rural Lincoln County, Kan.

Kathryn A. “Kay” Dees, 94, passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, in Ellsworth, Kan. She was born Sept. 20, 1931, one of six children, to George and Vlasta (Doubrava) Barta. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth, Kathryn was a 1949 graduate of Ellsworth High School and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She married Loren L. Dees in Ellsworth on Jan. 20, 1952.

An interesting fact about me is that I lived with a Jewish family in college. The woman I rented a bedroom from was a single mom in need of a little extra income. I had all the amenities of living with a family and the added bonus of learning about another culture.

Dear Editor,
I enjoyed your editorial “What Defines ‘Home’?” in Oct. 16 issue of the Independent-Reporter. You mention Wichita, the place you grew up, and write, “Do I consider it my hometown? I’m not sure.”
I feel the same way about the place I grew up, St. Joseph, Mo.
