Janice Kay (Miller) Miska (1941-2024)
Janice Kay (Miller) Miska, 83, of Hoisington, Kan., and formerly of Russell, Kan., passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at Via Christa St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kan.
Janice was born Sept. 4, 1941, in Ellsworth, Kan. She was the daughter of Steven and Ima (Grise) Miller. She grew up in Kanopolis, Kan., and graduated from the Kanopolis High School as the valedictorian in the Class of 1959. She then attended Barton County Community College and graduated with an associate degree in nursing in the first-ever nursing graduating class.
Janice was united in marriage to Arthur Miska in October 1959. This union was blessed with four daughters: Deb, Lori, Mary Jo and Cathy. They made their home in rural Ellsworth.
Janice was a registered nurse for Ellsworth County Hospital before moving to Russell in 1974, where she began working for the Russell Regional Hospital. In her long career as a nurse, she touched many lives. She served as an acute care nurse, ER nurse, surgery director, county health nurse for Russell County and director of nursing. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Hoisington. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting, babysitting her grandchildren and spending time with her family and friends.
Janice’s surviving family includes her four daughters, Deb Strobel (John), Lori Morgan (Jesse), Mary Jo Schoech (Michael) and Cathy Boxberger (Randy), all of Russell; three brothers, Johnnie Miller (April), Kanopolis; Jim Miller (Kathy), Tyler, Texas; and Gary Miller (Stella), Kanopolis; sister, Joan Bunch, Kanopolis; 10 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren on the way.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Kanopolis Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, with the family present to greet friends from 6-7 p.m. at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, Russell. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, which is in charge of arrangements.
