Gary R. Hunter (1940-2024)

Gary R. Hunter, 84, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, in Hays, Kan. “Hunter,” as he was fondly known, was born June 3, 1940, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Harold and Harriette (Krupp) Hunter. Gary married Betty Matoush in Wilson, Kan., on Feb. 23, 1963. He served in the U.S. Army as an MP in Korea during the Vietnam War and was a member of Wilson American Legion Post 262. Gary was also a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Wilson, and the Knights of Columbus. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a foreman after 32 years of work. In retirement, Gary and Betty enjoyed spending the last 30 years traveling the country and meeting new friends.  

Gary is survived by his wife Betty Hunter, Wilson; son Michael Hunter (Debbie), Wichita, Kan.; grandsons Cameron and Logan Hunter; and nephew Roger Hunter (Karen), Kansas City, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Linda; and brothers Don and Robert Hunter.
